Special Municipal Election - Council Expansion and Districting (Measure D) - March 5, 2024
On March 5, 2024, the qualified voters approved a Charter Amendment to expand the City Council from five (5) members to seven (7), with the new membership comprised of a mayor at-large and six Councilmembers, and transition from at-large elections to by-district elections for the six Councilmembers. The district boundaries are described in City Council Resolution No. 23-88.
The first district-based elections will occur for Districts 1, 2, 3, and 4 at the General Municipal Election on November 5, 2024. Those elected to Districts 2, 3, and 4 will receive four-year terms; the person elected to District 1 will receive a two-year term. On November 3, 2026, district-based elections will occur for Districts 1, 5, and 6, with those elected receiving four-year terms. The Mayor will continue to serve at-large for a two-year term.

General Municipal Election - November 5, 2024
General Municipal Elections are held in the City of Irvine on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November of even-numbered years. Other municipal elections or special elections may be called from time to time by the City Council.
The next General Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024 for the election of the Mayor and four members of the City Council. These positions are currently elected by Irvine citizens and are non-partisan. The Mayor serves at-large for a two-year term. Beginning with the General Municipal Election on November 5, 2024, one Councilmember from each of the four (4) Council Districts designated 2, 3, and 4, shall serve a four-year term. The Councilmember from District 1 shall serve a two-year term. The terms of the Councilmembers are staggered.
The nomination period for those interested in running for City Council begins on July 15, 2024, and ends on August 9, 2024. For more information, contact the City Clerk's Office at 949-724-6205 or via e-mail at clerk@cityofirvine.org.
Section 400 of the City Charter (Term Limits)
The Mayor shall serve a term of two (2) years. Any person who serves two (2) full terms as Mayor shall not be eligible to serve again as Mayor. If a Mayor serves a partial term in excess of one (1) year, it shall be considered a full term. The term of office for a Councilmember shall be four (4) years. Any person who serves two (2) full terms as a member of the City Council shall not be eligible to serve again as a member of the City Council. If a Councilmember serves a partial term in excess of two (2) years, it shall be considered a full term.
